Seizures are a sudden disruption of the brains electrical activity that sometimes results in muscle jerks or loss of consciousness. Not only are they a disruption to the brain, but they cause disruptions in the lives of the people who suffer from them, as I have come to learn from experience. "One in ten Americans will have a seizure at sometime, and at least 200,000 have at least one seizure a month", according to Maureen Haggerty in the Second Edition of the Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine. My sister just happens to be that one in ten people who suffer from seizures. There are many types of seizures, some more severe than others and about as many different treatment options to help reduce and eliminate the occurrence of seizures. However, the most surprising thing I have learned about seizure disorders is that the cause is not always determinable. This is probably the most frustrating and confusing part in the diagnosis and coping process with seizure disorders.
